Exploring Beneath the Palace: A Guide to Bangkok’s Newest Underground Landmark

The road in front of the Grand Palace can be crowded with people, buses and cars and sometimes can be scary to cross. Therefore the project of Na Phra Lan Tunnel began to solve this problem. Here are the highlights and how it works.

Crossing Tunnels

Na Phra Lan Tunnels consist of 2 crossing tunnels along the Na Phra Lan street as well as the main tunnel which is a large underground passageway beginning from the Grand Palace. It connects to several important nearby tourist attractions such as Sanam Luang, Wat Mahathat and the Thawornwatthu Building, Bangkok City Pillar Shrine, and Wat Phra Kaew.

Crossing tunnel in front of Tha Chang Pier. It is a small underground walkway between Tha Chang Pier and the Grand Palace. The tunnel offers few sitting areas and restrooms.
Crossing tunnel in front of Wiset Chai Si Gate of the Grand Palace. This is also a crossing tunnel but with no restroom.
Main tunnel can enter from the front of Manee Nopparat Gate of the Grand Palace. The main tunnel offers large sitting areas and restrooms.

Gigantic Underground Walkway

Upon descending the escalator to the main tunnel, visitors will find a huge, air-conditioned underground hall capable of accommodating over 2,500 people. This expansive area exhibits rare historical photos of Bangkok, along with plenty of seating.

Here you are free to sit anywhere, rest your feet from the long walk and cool yourself in the air-conditioned room as long as you want.

Free Restroom

Finding clean and safe restrooms around the Grand Palace can be difficult. Under the ground, visitors will find huge restrooms. You can use the facilities here for free.

Universal Design

There are elevators to serve visitors in wheelchairs or strollers on every tunnel. To use it, please contact the security guard at the entrance of each tunnel.

Na Phra Lan Tunnel opens daily from 8:00-18:00

Entrance Fee

0 Baht (Free) for everyone.
