Most of the time I just pass by this area but never intentionally wanted to go inside.
A few weeks ago, I had a chance to visit Mahakan Fort and go inside the narrow door to the surprising world behind the wall.
Here is what I found…
History of the Mahakan Fort
Mahakan Fort is a defensive structure to protect the city of Bangkok.
It was built together with another 14 forts around Bangkok during the reign of King Rama I, right after the founding of Bangkok in 1783.
The fort was also built together with the city wall, the white wall running continuously from the fort.
From 14 forts around Bangkok, there are only 2 forts left and Mahakan Fort is one of those.
In the past, if I recall correctly, you could even go up the fort to the top to see the view of Bangkok city.
But nowadays, you cannot enter the fort due to the conservation of the fort and security reasons.
Anyway, you can always enjoy taking photos with this iconic structure, especially when wearing something colourful.
Green Space to Relax
Behind the white wall, it is a nice urban green space perfect for relaxing my feet after a long walk.
It feels like a different small world. Calm and much cooler compared to the busy street outside.
Here you can always sit and walk around the park.
The other side of the park is a canal which circled around the area of Ko Rattanakosin.
It is not a big canal, but it opens up the entire space and you can see the view of the surrounding community.
Opening Hours
You are not allowed to enter the Mahakan Fort. However, you can take photos around the fort everyday 24/7.
The park at Mahakan Fort opens everyday from 05:00 until 21:00.
Entrance Fee
There is no entrance fee to use the park at Mahakan Fort.
