Phra Sumen Fort was built in 1783, along with the founding of Bangkok as a fortress to protect the city. There are only 2 well-preserved ancient forts left and Phra Sumen Fort is one of those. If you’re staying in the Khaosan area and want to spend an afternoon walking around the area, Phra Sumen Fort can be a good place to exercise, or have a picnic with the family at the side park.
What is the highlight?
1. The fort structure
It is a uniquely distinctive white, octagonal structure. Located in a garden surrounded by shophouses, often dark-colored due to their age, the fort stands out and easily recognizable from afar. It also provides a stunning backdrop for photographs that capture the essence of old Bangkok.
2. Santichaiprakarn Park
The area surrounding the fort structure was developed into a public park in 1999. It is considered the closest park to Khaosan area and, most importantly, is a riverside park on the Chao Phraya River. You can exercise outdoors, relax, and enjoy the sunset in this park.
3. Santichaiprakan Royal Pavilion
This beautiful red Thai-style pavilion located in the center of Santichaiprakan Park is the royal hall of the King and members of the royal family. It is used for royal barge processions and various royal festivals related to the Chao Phraya River, such as Songkran and Loi Krathong. Visitors can admire the beauty of this pavilion and feel free to take photos outside.
Opening hours
– The fort structure: Visitors are not allowed to go inside due to its age and safety concerns. However, visitors are allowed to take photos outside 24/7. At night, the lights are turned on, creating a different atmosphere than during the day.
– Santichaiprakarn Park: Opens daily from 5:00 to 21:00.
Entrance fee
Free. Everyone is free to walk inside the park area.

Take the Chaophraya Express Boat to Phra Arthit Pier and the side park of Phra Sumen Fort is right at the exit of the pier.
