Inside the shrine, the golden sacred pillar called “Bangkok City Pillar” stands still and waiting for you to discover. The pillar was built alongside the founding of Bangkok and the Chakri Dynasty.
The construction of a city pillar has been a belief rooted in the tradition of Thai for nearly a century. The pillar is believed to house sacred spirits which protect the city from all forms of danger and threats.
The Bangkok City Pillar
When you enter the shrine, you will notice there are two city pillars. The first city pillar (the slim and taller) was built in 1810 during the establishment of Bangkok and the Chakri Dynasty. However, due to lack of maintenance and deterioration over time, King Rama IV commissioned the construction of a second city pillar in 1852 and built a roofed structure to protect it.
Besides taking photos, visitors can pray for blessings from the sacred spirits. It is well-known to pray for blessings in work and career success.
