In a city as dense as Bangkok, finding a wide-open horizon is a rarity. But right in the center of the historic district lies Sanam Luang—a massive green expanse that serves as the city’s front yard, a sacred stage for Kings, and a peaceful retreat for travelers and locals alike.
Sanam Luang is a large open field located between the Grand Palace and the former Front Palace or the National Museum of Bangkok as of today. It was established during the reign of King Rama I and was originally used exclusively for royal cremation ceremonies of kings and high-ranking members of the royal family. Today, Sanam Luang still serves as a venue for royal ceremonies and is also open to the public for recreational purposes. Here are the highlights of this place
Royal ceremonies space
In addition to royal cremation ceremonies for monarchs and high-rank royal family members, Sanam Luang regularly hosts other royal events as well. One notable example is the annual Royal Plowing Ceremony in May, which is held to bring prosperity and encouragement to farmers, marking the beginning of the planting season.
State ceremonies in honor of the King are also conducted at this place. These include the offering of royal tributes and candle-lighting ceremonies to celebrate the King’s birthday, held annually in July.

Huge public space
When not in use for royal ceremonies, Sanam Luang is open to the public for recreational activities. If you stay in any hotel around Sanam Luang, feel free to do some exercising, cycling, or walking around. Please bear in mind that any commercial activities, littering and flying drones are strictly prohibited.
